Just for a bit of fun, I thought I'd try writing a contemporary blues song, and came up with this piece. I wrote it when the country was still, after nearly a year, in lockdown and restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Covid Follow the science lockdown blues
Stay in your house, don’t go out in the street
As there’s always a chance that some people you’ll meet
And when you go shopping, don’t dawdle a while,
Head down, do your shopping, and stay in your aisle
Oh Lord, Got them
Covid follow the science lockdown blues again
Can’t go to the pub, nor a gym can you seek,
‘Cos the Covid Police through the windows do peek
You can’t see your Gran, so she may die alone,
The best you can get’s a few words on the phone
Oh Lord, Got them
Covid follow the science lockdown blues again
Can’t go to the shops because they’re all shut,
The old city centres have all gone kaput.
Can’t go on holiday, abroad or at home,
Unless it’s for “work”, and Dubai’s shops you’ll roam.
Oh Lord, Got them
Covid follow the science lockdown blues again
You can’t buy a coat or new shoes for the kids,
Those aisles are all shut, ‘cos The Hancock forbids
Two metres apart, wear a mask on your face
Wash your hands twice a minute, you know, just in case.
Oh Lord, got them
Covid follow the science lockdown blues again
The Media spouts that we’re facing our doom,
They love all this mis’ry, ‘cos there’s money in gloom
Ignoring the drivers, the binmen, village shops,
The postie, the nurses who’ve worked – they’re the tops
Oh Lord, got them
Covid follow the science lockdown blues again
Kids can’t go to school, folk can’t go to work,
We’re told “fix your garden – it needs a rework”
A vaccine gives promise, a chance, and a hope
So cheer up one and all, don’t just sit there and mope
Oh Lord, got them
Covid follow the science lockdown blues again
Oh Lord, got them
Covid follow the science lockdown blues again
Oh Lord,
Oh Lord,
Shake off
Them Covid follow the science lockdown blues at last
With a haircut!
